Kringlas - A Family Holiday Treat

Of course, the holidays bring out the great family recipes. I was recently gifted with a package of our family traditional Kringlas from my sister via the U.S. Postman. I am sorry I have no history about this recipe to share with my readers except that my grandmother always had a batch made for us. I personally haven't tried to make them yet. Since you have to twist the dough a little like a pretzel, I always imagined mine coming out as mutant beings and I just can't take the pressure of failure So I am always grateful for others who do the baking. Happy Holidays to all and I will see you in the New Year!

Kringlas

Mix together:
1 ¼ c. sugar
1 egg
1 stick butter, softened
1 tsp. Vanilla

Then Add:

3 c. flour
½ tsp. Salt
1 ½ tsp. Baking powder
½ tsp. Nutmeg
1 tsp. Baking Soda
1c. Buttermilk or 1/2c. Sour cream, 2T. Powdered buttermilk and ½ c. water

Mix and set overnight in the fridge. To make, take a small ball of dough and form into a long rope then into a figure 8. Bake at 400 degrees for 5 minutes until light brown.

As the sister who made the kringlas, you should know that one batch makes about 5.5 dozen cookies. And that if you double the recipe, you will be twisting ropes for hours.
